Commemoration of Armenian Genocide Day in Las Vegas, April 24, 2010

On April 24th 2010, more than 220 people gathered at Faith Community Lutheran Church to commemorate the darkest chapter in Armenian history, the killing and annihilation of more than 1.5 million Armenians in the first genocide of the 20th Century. The event was organized by the Armenian Apostolic Church of Las Vegas, and sponsored by the Armenian Church of Las Vegas - Evangelical Chapter, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Armenian Church's organizations serving under the auspices of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

The program began with the United States and Armenian National Anthems, then the Master of Ceremony Mr. Aram Maissian very effectively ran the program. Mrs. Susan Arabyan presented an excellent and moving poem, being followed by two young musicians Jeremy Russo and Moriah Malonzo, who presented musical selections from Komitas, Khatchaturian and others.

The commemoration was significant with the distinguished presence of Hon. Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, Mayor of Las Vegas, who wholeheartedly spoke about the historicity of the Armenian Genocide and the great importance in its recognition today by the governments of the World. He read the special proclamation prepared by the City of Las Vegas and proclaimed April 24th as the Armenian Genocide Day in Las Vegas.

Also present was our dear Congresswoman and friend of the Armenian people, Rep. Shelley Berkley, who made the historical parallels between the Armenian Genocide and the Jewish Holocaust that followed it. She also underlined the great importance to finally pass the Armenian Genocide recognition in Congress very soon, and she presented the community with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition of the Armenian Genocide by her office.

The United States Senate candidate Danny Tarkanian, spoke about the hardships and historically indisputable Genocide that the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek people went through during the dying days of the Ottoman Empire and his words brought out an emotional outpour from the participants.

Other distinguished guests of the event were State Senate Candidate Trish Marsh, the Representative of Congresswoman Dina Titus, who also presented the Church with a special Congressional Recognition Certificate on the 95th Anniverary of the Armenian Genocide, as well as some clergymen, The Very Rev. Father Baret Yeretsian, who represented the Western Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, and was the Keynote Speaker, as well as Rev. Nerses Kopalyan from the Armenian Church of Las Vegas – Evangelical Chapter. Father Aprim Younadam, Pastor of the Assyrian Church of the East, Deacon Abouna, and members of the Armenian Apostolic, Evangelical, Assyrian and other churches.

The program also included a lively and beautiful poems and songs performed by the 40 students and teachers of the Armenian Church School of Las Vegas. Their performance was reassuring that our young generation continues on the path of seeking justice to the Armenian martyrs and living Nation.

A very special moving video was prepared for this most solemn event, and the audience were brought to tears to re-witness the horrors of the Armenian, Assyrian and the genocide of all minorities inside the Ottoman Turkish Empire.

The candlelight vigil that followed feathered the most beloved “Kyrie Eleison” or “Ter Voghormya” (Lord Have Mercy) on organ and on large screens, during which there was no eyes which were dry inside the hall.

Following the requiem service and the lighing of candles the people gathered left with the undying memory of our countless martyrs in their hearts, reassured, empowered and determined on their path to justice and peace.

May the memory of the Armenian Genocide victims and the victims of all genocides remain alive forever!

Holy Week Commemoration

The Holy Week commemoration in the Armenian Apostolic Church of Las Vegas were commemorated with Palm Sunday and later with Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services.

The parishioners of the church came to participate in the passion and crucifixion service on Holy Thursday and to take the light of our sweet smelling Christ with them on Holy Friday.

These services were very moving and touching, as we hope to see more of our faithful coming to the Church and giving their hearts to Jesus for the great sacrifice he gave for all of us with his Divine Love.
